leh ladakh

Isince it was opened in 1947leh ladakh has been known as the moonland ,little tibet and even the last shangri la ,what ever the description ,ladakh is one of india most remote regions.the culture of leh ladakh is predominantly buddhist,with once close culture and trading links with tibet.this is particuiarly evident in most populated region of lehand indus valley,with its many white washed gompas monasteries and forts.

leh ladakh is dominated by the dilapidated nine storey leh palace .until 1830 this was home to ladakhi royal family, before they were exciled to stok.above the palace at the top of the namgyal hill is the victory fort ,built to commemorate ladakh"s victory over the balti kashmir armies in 16th century.the old town of leh ladakh is at the base of namgyal hill ,a labyrinth of alleys and house stacked with wood and dung -fuel to withstand the long winter months.
